Like most moms, I never get to the end of my to do
list. I often wonder how to accomplish
the everyday basic things. Being a mom
is so challenging at times, for example.
A few days ago I put London down for a nap, we had the usual screaming
fit (for some reason when she turned two she really became a two year old) but
at some point they need to learn to just go to sleep when they are in bed so I
let her cry it out and eventually heard pounding at the door… her door. Knowing exactly what had happened I opened
her door to find her with her purse strapped over her shoulder and a big grin
on her face. “What are you doing? Did you get hurt?” “Yeah, right here” she replied pointing to her cheek. I could see a red mark and assumed that she
must have hit her laundry basket on the way down. I tried to put her down one more time, but needless
to say we skipped the nap, but eventually it was bed time, Dustin was working
late, I put her in bed, went outside and peeked through her blinds to see that
she climbed right back out. I ended up taking her mattress out and just setting
it on the floor, she cried and pounded
on the door and when Dustin came home he took the entire mattress off and just
set in on the floor so basically she sleeps in a cage (we had to do this with
Brinley too).
Fast forward to the next night. I’m working on dinner and helping Brinley
with her homework (for some reason it took her an hour and a half this
particular night) and you may or may not know that things like that are
impossible with a two year old
especially one who thinks she is a monkey,
I swear that girl would climb Mt. Everest if it were in front of
her. I usually try to do coloring and
games with London, but when that wore off I eventually put her in her crib with
some books. She was actually content,
she loves books. When I walked into her
room I found what reminds me of the scene in Daddy Day Care, If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m
talking about human feces, everywhere.
And of course as soon as I pick her up my doorbell rings, and my timer
goes off. Brinley lets the company (my
parents) in, I tell them to hold on
while I give London a bath… another bath.
“And by the way, don’t go in her room, I haven’t cleaned that up yet.” And then my Mom says, “is that your timer
that keeps going off?” “Yep, that’s my
timer.” Took care of my company… and my dinner… told London not to play in her
poop anymore… threw a bunch of books away… did one gigantic load of laundry…
then thankfully my husband walked in the door and helped with the scrub, clean
and disinfecting part. Gosh, I was doing
so good and feeling so productive and now it’s time for my meeting and we haven’t
even had our dinner (the one that I went to a lot of work to prepare and was
really excited about) and now my 6 year old is sad because it’s Wed and we
still haven’t had family night and I keep telling her tomorrow because although
it’s planned, for some reason I just can’t ever make it happen and so I sit and
I tell her it will have to be tomorrow… again.
I then I listen to her tell me how I lied to her and she cries because
she is sad. And I’m sad, but I scarf
down a few bites of dinner (so not the sit down, home cooked, family meal I had
planned) and then I leave.
Finally a new day! Not
that the past two were bad, there were not, just an example of my life. Our mornings can be hectic, but if I plan
well, get up at 4:30 and am home by 6:00 to start laundry, get Brinley in the
tub and work on breakfast they are
really manageable. I actually really
enjoy the mornings with my girls and I was on a roll, I read the last story in
Brinley’s library book to her so she could return it, and set London down long
enough to finish up our lunches. We were
going to be out the door on time and have all of our morning chores done. I was just peeling the last peach for our
lunches when Brinley said, “Mom, London has another poopy mess.” “Brinley, you better be kidding me!” “I’m not Mom, she does!” I take a deep breath
and sigh, “Okay.” And then I enter her room to find an exact repeat of the
night before. I strip her down… give her
her fourth bath in 24 hours… rewash the laundry I had just completed a few hours
earlier… remind London not to play in her poop… scrub, clean and disinfect… and listen to my 6 year old cry because we
were late for school (I haven’t told you about school yet, have I?) So we get in the car, we have this routine
where Brinley listens to her violin
music until I drop her off at school and at that point we put London’s music in
and she listens to that until I drop her off.
So we were listening to things like Old
McDonald Had a Farm and the Itsy
Bitsy Spider and I glance back at her singing her little heart out and can’t
help but think to myself, this is why I
want more of you! I’m so incredibly
thankful and in love with this “CRAPPY” life of mine. I wouldn't have it any other way.
